Ken Scott Showcases Leatherwork and Naturalist-Inspired Paintings

Plainfield, IN – The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is proud to announce an exciting art exhibit featuring the work of renowned artist Ken Scott, on display from November through December 2024. This unique exhibit will highlight Scott’s exceptional craftsmanship in leatherwork and his distinct approach to painting, blending history, nature, and artistry into every piece.

Ken Scott, a celebrated artist and craftsman, has spent decades refining his skills in both fine art and leatherwork. Born in West Franklin, Illinois, in 1942, Scott pursued a career in commercial art, studying at Southern Illinois University before transitioning into a successful career in advertising. His work at various agencies—including his own, Ken Scott Inc.—allowed him to cultivate his artistic talents, eventually leading him to focus full-time on his art after retiring from advertising in 2006.

Scott’s artwork draws inspiration from 18th-century naturalists, particularly their ability to capture the beauty and detail of the natural world. Specializing in repurposing antique book covers as painting surfaces, Scott’s work often features birds, butterflies, and botanicals, evoking a sense of historical significance.

His paintings and leather hunting pouches have gained national recognition, even being used as props in movies such as The Revenant, starring Billy Bob Thornton and The Alamo, starring Leondardo DiCaprio. In his own words, Scott explains, “I’ve always been drawn to things that have a history and story behind them, things that show signs of wear and age. My goal as an artist is to create every item with historical age and feel.” This passion for history and craftsmanship is evident throughout his work, which frequently involves intricate detailing, hand lettering, and watercolor illustrations.

Scott’s unique painting surfaces—old, upcycled book covers—enhance the sense of timelessness that defines his work. “Each of my paintings resonates with historical perspective upon its completion,” Scott notes. “You look at it as having been loved and handed down from generation to generation.”

In addition to his paintings, Scott’s leather hunting pouches have been widely acclaimed. He has led workshops across the country, teaching traditional leatherworking techniques and passing on his knowledge to a new generation of craftsmen. His creations have been featured in museums, historical reenactments, and private collections worldwide.

The upcoming exhibit will give visitors the chance to explore Scott’s wide-ranging talents, from his meticulously crafted leather goods to his evocative naturalist paintings. Each piece on display reflects his deep connection to the past and his dedication to preserving historical techniques and aesthetics.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the work of one of America’s top craftsmen. The exhibit will run from November 1 through December 31, 2024, at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. A Gallery Reception for the public will be held on Saturday, November 9 from 1:00 - 3:00pm.
